A NSW man who was found unconscious on a footpath in the state's north has died in hospital, prompting a homicide investigation.
Aaron Marks, 38, left a pub on River Street in Ballina before midnight on Saturday and a passer-by found him unconscious and with serious head injuries about two hours later.
Mr Marks was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital but died on Wednesday, NSW Police said in a statement on Friday.
The attack triggered a strike force investigation earlier this week and local detectives are now being assisted by the State Crime Command homicide squad.
Investigators have released CCTV footage showing Mr Marks leaving the pub and have called for anyone who was in the area to come forward.
