Man allegedly attacks armoured vehicle with hammer in wild road rage attack

A man has been arrested accused of attacking an armoured car in Melbourne with a hammer.

It followed a search Friday afternoon to find him. Police said the man is assisting with enquiries.

Victoria Police allege the armoured car was driving on Racecourse Road in Flemington and proceeding to turn into a shopping centre car park when a red hatchback nearly collided with it about 1.05pm on Friday.

“The driver of the red hatchback then approached the white vehicle and remonstrated with the driver before using a hammer to smash the driver’s side window and front windscreen,” police said.

“The driver of the hatchback then returned to the boot of his car. The cash logistics driver has then drawn but not discharged his legally issued firearm before the driver of the hatchback fled the scene in his vehicle.”

Video was shared by police of a man smashing the windshield with the hammer.

Witness Tim Bela told Nine News he was informed “there’s an attack outside” the shopping centre.

“We just expected the worst,” he said.

“We heard Armaguard had to take out their guns and maybe (they were) under some sort of threat.”
