Man attacked by shark on the Great Barrier Reef near Airlie Beach
A man has been attacked by a shark on the Great Barrier reef in the Whitsundays.
Queensland Ambulance confirmed to Yahoo7 News the man, who is understood to be in his 20s, was bitten on the thigh at 12.30pm off Airlie Beach at Hardy Reef, 50km northeast of Hamilton Island.
While Queensland Ambulance could not comment on the man’s condition, it is understood his injuries are not life-threatening.
A rescue helicopter with a critical care paramedic was sent to Heart Pontoon where the patient was winched from the location in a serious but stable condition and will be transferred to Mackay Base Hospital.
The attack comes just months after a 33-year-old doctor was killed by a shark in the Whitsunday Islands in November.
