A British man has been arrested in the NSW Alpine region after a vicious late-night attack in which a young couple was attacked and the woman sexually assaulted.

The 28-year-old man was arrested outside a Jindabyne unit about 9am on Tuesday, with a search warrant executed at the unit where investigators seized items relevant to the investigation.

It follows last Thursday's incident when a 22-year-old woman and a 25-year-old man were walking along Jindabyne's main road and were allegedly approached by an unknown man who punched the male unconscious and then physically and sexually assaulted the female.

The pair from NSW were treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics for facial injuries before the woman was taken to Canberra Hospital and the man to Cooma Hospital.

The accused has been taken to Jindabyne Police Station to be questioned, police said.
