A 32-year-old man has been arrested in relation to the discovery of a woman’s body in Melbourne’s Chinatown on Wednesday morning.
Homicide Squad detectives found the woman’s body at the intersection of Bourke Street and Celestial Avenue just after 6.30am.
A post mortem exam was being conducted Wednesday evening to determine the woman’s cause of death.
Detectives revealed they were treating her death as suspicious.
The arrested man was being held in custody while he assisted investigators with enquiries.
A section of Little Bourke Street was cordoned off and closed to the public as police assessed the crime scene.
"A member of the public did call triple-0 and reported the incident,” Victoria Police Acting Superintendent Craig Peel told reporters.
Supt Peel said the cause of death remained unclear, and the woman's identity had not yet been confirmed or her next-of-kin notified.
Police at the scene have informed the ABC they believed the woman was approximately 33.
The street is one of the CBD’s major thoroughfares, bustling with restaurants and shops.
Any witnesses or anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online.
