Tape-bound corpse found in man's apartment

A man has been arrested after a corpse bound in duct tape was found in his apartment.

Police told New York Daily News the body was found bound from his head to his ankles with slashes to the chest and wrists inside a Bronx apartment in New York on Friday at about 5pm (local time).

Residents called police complaining of a foul smell coming from the second-floor.

A resident who didn’t want to be identified told NBC 4 neighbours complained about the stench for about “five to six days”.

It’s believed the corpse had been in the apartment for more than a week.

Charles Votaw, 37, who lives in the apartment was charged with assault, concealment of a human body and tampering with physical evidence.

Votaw told police he had sublet the apartment to the man who was found dead.

Neighbour Maria Jimenez told NY Daily News Votaw’s apartment was “chaotic” and a “mess” adding she had helped him clean it.

The building’s maintenance man, known as Paul, said Votaw had problems.

“He would stand in the middle of the street, no shirt on, screaming ‘What! What! What!’ at people,” Paul told NY Daily News.

A medical examination will determine how the man died.
