Man charged over cop car crash
A man will face court after he allegedly stole a police van before crashing it in Brisbane’s north.
Officers initially confronted the 37-year-old after hearing reports he was armed with a knife on Boundary Rd in Narangba about 3.20am on Tuesday.
Police allege the man was able to evade the officers before jumping behind the wheel of the police van and driving off.
“The man has subsequently crashed the police vehicle on Anzac Ave at Mango Hill,” Queensland Police said in a statement.
The van ploughed into a tree near the Mango Hill Tavern.
The police van was left crumpled at the scene and the man was lucky to escape with non-life-threatening injuries.
Despite the crash, the man then allegedly attempted to flee on foot and was chased by officers before being arrested.
He was transported to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital for treatment.
Late on Tuesday, the 37-year-old Moreton Bay man was charged with two counts of obstruct police and one count each of going armed so as to cause fear, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, unlicensed driving, dangerous operation of a vehicle while adversely affected by an intoxicating substance and wilful damage of police property.
He has been denied bail and is expected to appear before Pine Rivers Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
