Man accused of toddler's hit-run death thought he had 'hit a ball'

The panicked triple-zero call that followed the alleged hit-run death of a toddler in Adelaide has been revealed in court.

Michael Bullock is accused of hitting two-year-old Zayne Colson at Dover Gardens in 2017.

Rather than stopping, he allegedly drove around the corner while his wife called emergency services.

“He just accidentally ran over a child, my husband,” Donna Bullock tells the operator.

Asked if the child was conscious, Michael Bullock said, “I don’t know, I don’t think so.”

Soon after, police set up road blocks and ambulances rushed to the scene.

Bullock told a jury on Friday that he wasn’t speeding.

“A little girl ran out from behind a tree,” he said. “I swerved to miss her.

“I hear a noise at the front of my car, then I felt something go under my rear wheel.

“I just thought it was a ball, I didn’t know.

“I stopped the car, I saw a child lying on the road. I panicked, I didn’t know what to do, so I drove home.”

Under cross-examination, Bullock admitted hearing screaming coming from the accident scene, but denied hearing Zayne’s mother calling out for help.

Bullock told the jury he drove away because he believed he was in danger after an attempted home invasion at his house two years earlier.

The trial resumes on Monday.
