A dad has been charged with capital murder with police accusing him of sexually assaulting his nine-month-old daughter in an alleged attack that caused her death.
Police were called to the Houston, Texas home of 23-year-old Luis Luna last week to find his baby daughter unresponsive, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
Officers arrived as paramedics were working on the infant, Savayah Mason, who was then transported to hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Harris County Sheriff's Office homicide investigators established an investigation into the incident, as the forensics team worked to determine the cause of the baby’s death.
An autopsy revealed she had died as a result of asphyxiation during the alleged sexual assault.
Luna was arrested on Monday after investigators interviewed him.
The Harris County District Attorney’s Office accepted charges of Capital Murder against Luna over the alleged killing of Savayah.
If convicted, Luna could face life behind bars or the death penalty.
