'That's the Aloha spirit': Man, 88, finishes Honolulu Marathon in 18 hours

An 88-year-old man has managed to finish a marathon in just under 18 hours.

Sadao Ito, from Japan, competed in the Honolulu Marathon in Hawaii on Sunday.

The marathon is the fourth-longest in the USA at 42 kilometres with competitors starting at 5am.

About 20,000 people entered this year’s marathon, Hawaii News Now reported.

According to the marathon’s Facebook page, Mr Ito was the last to cross the finishing line.

It took the octogenarian 17 hours, 50 minutes and 52 seconds to finish the course.

But judging by his photo, he doesn’t mind.

Mr Ito was seen smiling and clutching his white cap beneath his finishing time – even though it was more than 15 hours after first place crossed.

“Give it up for Ito-san and all of you on your amazing achievements,” the marathon organisers wrote on their Facebook page.

“Finishing anywhere between 2:09:01 and 17:50.52. That’s the Aloha spirit!”

The picture of a jubilant Mr Ito has been shared more than 420 times.

“How do run 17 hours?” one woman wrote.

“That’s crazy! But congrats!”

Another simply wrote #respect while someone labelled the Japanese man “inspiring”.

“You rock,” the woman wrote.

Last month, a little boy who wrote a letter to his dad in heaven has received a heart-warming response from his local postal service.

Seven-year-old Jase, from West Lothian in Scotland, tragically lost his father four years ago and wrote the letter for his dad’s birthday.

Several weeks later, Jase received a touching response from the Royal Mail.

“This was a difficult challenge avoiding stars and other galactic objects on route to heaven,” the letter reads.

“However please be assured that this particular important item of mail has been delivered.”
