Man, 76, dies weeks after alleged assault

An elderly man has died nearly two weeks after an alleged assault in Sydney’s inner-west.

Emergency services found the 76-year-old man after he was allegedly assaulted by another man at Liverpool Road in Ashfield about 11.45am on Sunday September 29.

He was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a critical condition.

A crime scene was established and police launched an investigation into the incident.

A 58-year-old man was arrested at a shopping mall in Ashfield about 6.15am on Friday October 4 following further inquiries.

He was taken to Burwood Police Station and charged with reckless grievous bodily harm, and hinder or resist police in the execution of duty.

He was refused bail and appeared at Burwood Local Court that same day, where he was again refused bail.

However police were advised on Thursday that the injured man died in hospital.

The 58-year-old man’s charge has now been upgraded to murder.

He is set to front the same court on Wednesday October 23.
