Man, 23, dies after being bitten by sea snake

A man has died after he was bitten by a sea snake while working on a fishing trawler off the Northern Territory coast.

The 23-year-old British man was working on a fishing trawler off the coast at Groote Eylandt when he was bitten about midday on Thursday.

He was pulling up a fishing net when he was bitten, NT Police confirmed to Yahoo7 News.

CareFlight assisted along with other ships in the area, providing medical supplies for emergency treatment.

The man was declared dead after the trawler arrived at the town of Borroloola in the Gulf of Carpentaria with St John Ambulance paramedics unable to save the man.

The man is understood to be a backpacker, NT News reported.

The British Embassy has been notified of the death.

Police are continuing their enquiries and a post-mortem will be conducted.
