Man, 22, dies in horror crash that split car in half

A young man has died after his car split in half in a horrific crash on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.

The car was travelling west on Maleny-Kenilworth Road at Witta, west of Mooloolaba, on Friday about 8.40pm when the driver lost control and crashed into trees.

It is believed the vehicle was trying to overtake other cars.

The passenger, a 22-year-old Sunshine Coast man, died at the scene.

Meanwhile the driver, a 39-year-old Nambour man, received possible spinal injuries.

He is currently at Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

Queensland Police Senior Sergeant Mike Buckley described the scene as “harrowing”.

“It’s not one we come across all that often,” he said.

Investigations are continuing.
