'This is not a gift': Man's generous gesture for baby girl on train

A parent has thanked the kindness of a stranger after receiving a heart-warming note and $20 cash while riding on a Sydney train.

The parent shared a picture to social media of a hand-written letter and $20 note, received from a “stranger in a suit” while riding the train with a nine-month-old infant.

The letter accompanying the cash read: “This is not a gift. It is an investment. Please let your baby know that an old Aboriginal man invested $20 to her college fund.”

The parent shared the picture to Reddit, with the caption: “Thank you kind stranger on the train! It’s people like you making Sydney a better place.

“We will frame this and make sure she sees it! Many love, kind strange[r] in a suit, who had a joyful interaction with our 9 months old girl!”

Many on Reddit praised the anonymous man for his kind act.

“That's awesome. Small gestures like that often go a long way,” one wrote.

Another added: “Needed the warms and fuzzies today, thanks! ❤️❤️❤️”

However, some others called the gesture a fake, attacking the supposed note-writer’s choice of the word “college” in favour of “university”.

One wrote: “College fund??? She she going to America to study? Don't you mean University?”

Despite the naysayers, another person chimed in to say: “Well Australia does have Colleges too, if you're going to be an a*** about it.”

The parent responded in the thread, saying the note was received on Wednesday night on train at Sutherland, south of the city.
