Rafal Majka has claimed his fifth Grand Tour victory, holding on to win the Vuelta a Espana's 15th stage as Australia's Chris Hamilton finished third.

Majka - the UAE Team Emirates rider from Poland - broke clear with 87km left of the 197.5km stage to El Barraco to savour his first win on the Grand Tour since 2017.

He crossed the finish line in four hours, 51 minutes, 36 seconds.

Italy's Fabio Aru could not stay with Majka on the penultimate classified climb and the Polish rider stayed clear on the day's main climb - the Puerto de Mijares - to finish one minute, 27 seconds ahead of second-placed Steven Kruijswijk, the Dutch rider from Jumbo-Visma.

Team DSM's Hamilton was 2min:19sec behind Majka in third.

Odd Christian Eiking held on to the leader's red jersey.

The Norwegian rider was fifth on Sunday, preserving his 54 second lead over second-placed Guillaume Martin.

Reigning champion and race favourite Primoz Roglic is 1min:36sec behind in third.

Eiking has held the leader's red jersey since the 10th stage.

The riders take the second and final rest day of the three week race on Monday.

Racing resumes with Tuesday's flat stage that will favour the sprinters - a 180km route from Laredo to Santa Cruz de Bezana in northern Spain.
