David and Lachlan Pirie, the husband and son of a Queensland magistrate, are on trial for assault

The husband of a Queensland magistrate on trial for hitting a grandmother with a shovel handle was acting in self defence, a court has heard.

David Pirie and son Lachlan have both been charged with assault over the alleged February 2017 attack of Jennifer Toohey, with whose family they had been in ongoing spats since 2013.

Crown prosecutor Chris Cook told Brisbane District Court Lachlan had thrown rocks at the 52-year-old while David punched her head and hit her in the stomach with a shovel handle, leaving her with bruises.
