Ocean pool drained as video emerges of maggots at popular Sydney swimming spot

Sydney's Bilgola Beach ocean pool has been drained as Northern Beaches Council attempts to rid the region of its maggot infestation.

Video has emerged showing the thousands of maggots that closed the rock pool while the offensive creatures also invaded the adjacent beach, neighbouring Newport beach and also turned up further south at Dee Why beach.

It's understood a high tide washed in large chunks of seaweed that were littered with maggot eggs over the weekend.

With no other practical solution available to clear out the the maggots on the sand, it's now a waiting game for the larvae to develop into flies and clear out.

The pool meanwhile was drained on Thursday after a sign was placed outside warning swimmers not to try their luck in the polluted water.

Squeamish footage captured by local resident Colin Weir shows the aftermath of the high tide.

"It was disgusting, this moving carpet of white maggots," Bilgola local Colin Weir told News Corp.

“I’ve been going to this beach every year for 15 years and have never seen anything like this.

A Surf Life Saving spokeswoman told Yahoo7 News that the seagulls had been the only locals pleased by the critters setting up camp on several northern beaches, including Dee Why and Newport.

There is concern more eggs could be washed ashore during future high tides.
