The husband of a Nebraska senator raised some eyebrows—including Kamala Harris’—when he refused to shake the vice president’s hand during his wife’s swearing-in.

Bruce Fischer held the Bible while his wife Republican Sen. Deb Fischer recited the oath. Fischer gestured for her husband to move closer to the vice president, but he seemed reluctant.

“It’s okay, I won’t bite,” Harris said.

Afterwards, when Harris extended her hand to shake, the senator’s husband was holding the Bible in one hand and a cane in the other. But even when Fischer took the Bible, her husband put his free hand in his pocket instead and said, “thank you,” with a stoic expression.

The vice president then raised her eyebrows and turned towards the camera to take a photo.

MAGA supporters were quick to defend the senator’s husband.

“He has a cane in one hand and the Bible in the other... which one did she expect him to drop?” one commenter said.

Others were happy to think that he left Harris hanging on purpose.

One user called him “legendary” while another said, “good for him.”

“She looks so insulted. And I’m here for it,” a comment read.

Some thought that whether or not the swerve was an accident or a snub, it was unprofessional.

“He’s old. And if it was on purpose, he’s rude,” a commenter wrote. “I’m conservative, and even I can acknowledge this is a tough day for Kamala, and she’s doing her job gracefully.”

Fischer’s office did not immediately respond to the Daily Beast’s request for comment.
