Mag 6 earthquake strikes eastern Indonesia

A 6.0-magnitude earthquake has struck eastern Indonesia, the geophysics and climatology agency says.

Rahmat Triyono, head of earthquake and tsunami centre at the agency said in a statement that the epicentre was located at about 234km west of Saumlaki, a town on Yamdena Island on Maluku province and occurred at a depth of 197km in Banda Sea in eastern Indonesia.

The quake struck at 4.43pm AEDT on Sunday but the quake did not have the potential to generate a tsunami and there were no immediate threats of damage or injuries.
