Are the Married At First Sight weddings legally binding?

If you're thinking to yourself, 'I thought they were already married', then you may not be alone, especially considering they donned the traditional wedding attire and walked down the aisle on Married At First Sight.

However it turns out the 'marriages' on Married At First Sight aren't actually legally binding and are seen as commitment ceremonies.

"In order to comply with the Australian Marriage Act (1961) which requires one month and one day notification, a marriage in law was not conducted," a Channel Nine spokesperson told NowToLove way back in 2015 when the first series aired.

"Each participant embarked on a commitment ceremony with a wedding celebrant with all due intention to commit fully to this union for the duration of the experiment.

"At the end of the experiment, they are given the option to continue with the relationship or go their separate ways."

Martha and Michael won't be the only couple to official marry after the show, as Cam and Jules, who also met and fell in love on the 2018 series of the show, tied the knot in Sydney in November 2019.

Martha and Michael's relationship timeline

Martha and Michale’s love story may not have started out in a conventional way, but they’ve proved reality TV show pairings really can last, by becoming one of a handful of Married At First Sight couples to make things work in the real world.

After meeting at the altar on the Channel Nine reality show, the couple instantly hit things off and their relationship has appeared to be plain sailing ever since.

In 2020, Martha made the move from Melbourne to Sydney’s Bondi Beach to be with Michael, with the couple having just moved into their own home.

Martha has firmly established herself as one of the biggest influencers in Australia, with over 620,000 followers, while Michael has launched a successful online personal training course called TruFit By Michael.
