He sparked plenty of drama on this year’s season of Married At First Sight, and now Daniel Holmes has divided his fans on social media with a very controversial post.

The 31-year-old personal trainer-turned-graphic designer took to Instagram on Wednesday to ask his followers a question reality TV viewers have always argued about: “Is it a bad thing to apply for MAFS for reasons other than love?”

The post was quickly flooded with comments, with a number of people saying it’s wrong to go into the experiment without genuine intentions because “the purpose of the show is for love”.

“Yes you go on there to make things work with your partner, not cheat on your significant other,” one person wrote, followed by another who added, “It does spoil the concept of the show, like sucking a sweet with the wrapper on”.

“Yes! It just wastes everyone’s time!” a third said, while someone else remarked, “You are taking a person's chance who is ACTUALLY looking for love”.

On the other hand, there were quite a few followers who agreed that it’s okay to go onto the country’s biggest reality TV show in the hopes of gaining something other than just love.

“At the end of the day, anyone with half a brain knows the show is so filtered and chopped about to suit producers and pull in ratings,” one fan commented. “If you can make a financial benefit and positive lifestyle change from a TV show that’s made for drama then go for it! I’d go on it for the free holiday and teeth afterwards.”

“If the show is as staged as everyone is saying, definitely not,” a different user shared. “You gotta do what you gotta do. If it was all legit, then yes it would be bad.”

“No one goes on that show for love, let’s be honest,” another replied. “Anyone who says they are is full of s**t, none of the couples work out and they’re forced to compromise with a person they’re clearly very incompatible with! You’ve obviously got something good from it so who cares about the haters.”

Meanwhile, his partner Carolina Santos left a very sweet comment, writing: “Lucky you did get love”.

'There’s nothing wrong with that'

Daniel’s post comes shortly after he spoke candidly with Yahoo Lifestyle about the topic and revealed the three reasons why he thinks people really go onto MAFS.

“This is in order. Number one: clout, fame, attention. All good, there’s nothing wrong with that in my opinion,” he said.

“Number two: adventure. spontaneousness. Cool. Number three: If you're lucky, love. That's the order and I think that's fine. Some don't find it, some do, all good.

“You see comments. from people like, ‘Oh, you just want your blue tick and you just want the benefits that come after MAFS’. Sorry I want to potentially change my life for the better?”
