We made a wild ‘Jell-O salad’ recipe from the 1950s

·2-min read

This recipe for Jell-O salad dates back to the 1950s.

It seems, at first glance, like something that would’ve disappeared after the Jell-O-crazed cooking movement of the ’50s and ’60s. But thanks to the internet, almost everything comes back in style eventually.

How to avoid panic buying in an ultra-competitive housing market

Now TikTokers and YouTubers alike have been giving the bizarre snack a go. There are plenty of variations on Jell-O salad, but it typically includes some combination of mayonnaise, horseradish and lime-green gelatin.

That doesn’t sound like a necessarily natural combo; still, there has to be some reason this recipe has survived the test of time. Jell-O salad may look gross, but is it could it actually taste pretty good?

To find out, we tried it ourselves. Read below to see how to make the snack — and, more important, if you should — or watch the video above.

Guys, here's how to pick the perfect first date outfit:

How to make Jell-O salad

There are plenty of ways to make Jell-O salad, and we picked the wildest version we could find. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 large pack of lime Jell-O

  • 1 large pack of lemon Jell-O

  • A bundt cake or Jell-O mold

  • 2 cups cottage cheese

  • 1 cup mayonnaise

  • 1 can of sweetened condensed milk (14 ounces)

  • 2 tablespoons horseradish

  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice

To start, dissolve the Jell-O in 1 1/2 cups boiling water. Then add the mixture to 1 1/2 cups ice water. Let the mix cool in the fridge for 45 minutes.

Meanwhile, you can make the “salad” part of this by combining the cottage cheese, mayo, condensed milk, horseradish and lemon juice in a large bowl. Stir well to combine, then mix with the Jell-O when it’s cooled.

Next, pour the whole thing into a mold and chill it in the fridge overnight.

And then you’re ready to eat! Our Jell-O salad came out looking wiggly, jiggly and mint greeen. It did not look very appetizing.

Yet, we still managed to take a few bites. The texture of this dish is a lot to handle. It’s lumpy and spongey, while the flavor is a strange combination of sugar-sweet Jell-O and hot horseradish. Overall, this was one of the weirdest things we’ve ever tried on the show.
