A man has been charged over the assault of a Victorian police officer at an anti-lockdown rally in Melbourne last month.

Police say the officer was on the ground attempting to arrest another man when he was kneed in the face.

The police officer received minor injuries during the incident.

A 40-year-old man, from Ringwood East, was charged on Tuesday and bailed to Melbourne Magistrates Court on March 15.
