‘I’ll give money to charities, not the FA’: Furious Jose Mourinho refuses to comment on Newcastle penalty
Jose Mourinho was frustrated at his team dropping two points late on against Newcastle United and hinted that his team are unfairly targeted when it comes to authorities making decisions.
Tottenham led for most of the game and should have been out of sight, but a spate of missed chances left the Magpies a glimmer of hope which was handed to them in stoppage time.
The VAR informed the referee that Eric Dier had handled in the box in the 95th minute and, upon a pitchside inspection, a penalty was given despite Dier facing the other way at the moment of contact.
Callum Wilson scored from the spot to equalise Lucas Moura’s opener and nick a 1-1 draw and Mourinho refused to comment on the incident after the game, not-so-subtly pointing out that he’d be fined if he said what he thought.
“We kept them away from our box; there are boxes and boxes and we know the Tottenham box is a special box,” he cryptically told Sky Sports after the game.
"So we managed to keep them away and then we had the situation where we lost two points but I’m not going to comment on it.
"I react during the game but the game is finished and I don’t want to speak about it.
“If I want to give money away I’ll give it to charities, not the FA, so I won’t comment.”
Mourinho also noted that Son Heung-min had been taken off at half-time with an injury and laid the blame for this issue - and future predicted injuries - at the feet of the fixture list.
“Son is just the first one. I imagine Tuesday another, Thursday another one. This is the respect that Tottenham gets. We’re a big club but a club where our history with trophies is not as big as other clubs and i realise the difference between clubs with big history and ours.”
