Representative Liz Cheney (R-WY) shocked Leslie Stahl on 60 Minutes Sunday when the ultra-conservative Republican admitted that her past opposition to gay marriage was wrong. Cheney’s opposition caused a rift in the family, as her sister Mary is gay, and her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, came out in support of gay marriage years ago.

“I was wrong. I was wrong. I love my sister very much. I love her family very much. And I was wrong,” Cheney said. “It’s a very personal issue, very personal for my family. I believe that my dad was right, and my sister and I have had that conversation.”

“Wow,” Stahl responded, “I was not expecting that.”

“We have to recognize, as human beings, that we need to work against discrimination of all kinds, in our country, in our state,” Cheney continued. “We were at an event a few nights ago, and there was a young woman who said she doesn't feel safe sometimes because she's transgender, and nobody should feel unsafe. Freedom means freedom for everybody.”
