Liverpool homes and business evacuated after large gas leak

The leak was discovered on Waterloo Road by the junction with Regent Street in the Vauxhall area

A large gas leak has forced shoppers and residents to evacuate near Liverpool city centre.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) said crews were called to the Vauxhall area before 12:30 GMT after a "significant gas leak was reported".

Police evacuated shops, businesses and homes along Waterloo Road, at the junction with Regent Street.

Liverpool City Council said the leak, which had been coming from a pipe, had been capped by engineers from Cadent.

Meetings between MFRS, Merseyside Police and the council to establish a plan of action have taken place and gas monitoring is still in place at the site.

Several roads remain closed and people are asked to avoid the area.
