    Earthquake rocks Sydney

A 5.0 magnitude earthquake has struck NSW, with residents across Sydney reporting they felt tremors shortly after midday.

One Kensington resident said online it was "short but sizeable" and felt a "sideways movement for about 6-8 seconds". Hundreds more have reported "shaking" inside their homes.

A map from GeoScience Australia shows the earthquake occurred roughly 250km north of Sydney near Denman.

Some residents nearby have reported damage to buildings, Nine News reported, while surrounding areas have reportedly lost power.

  • Earthquake revised down to 4.8 magnitude

We must also note the earthquake to hit NSW has been revised down to 4.8 magnitude after GeoScience Australia initially reported it was 5.0.

There was a second quake detected 14 minutes later, 4km northeast of the original site south of Muswellbrook and measured 2.9 magnitude.

  • Shopper details moment earthquake hit town

We've got more information from the Aldi shopper who earlier shared a picture of the Muswellbrook store's collapsed ceiling.

Dean Reid, operations manager at Aussie Ark told Yahoo News Australia he felt a "sharp jolt backwards and forwards" in his car.

"I was just getting out of the car to go to Aldi and the car shook," he said.

"I didn't really trigger what it was. I thought I actually imagined it, because it was that quick."

Reid explained that the shaking was over in about ‘two seconds’, but could see a power pole swaying in the distance.

"I got out [of the car] and looked around the car park, and everyone was acting normal.

"I went in and did my full shop, and then I went to the last aisle in Aldi, and they stopped me going down, and I didn't really know why.

"At the cash register and they said, 'Oh, it's closed off because the roof fell in the earthquake', and that's when I started putting everything together."

  • Two schools evacuated as a result of quake

Muswellbrook South Public School was forced to evacuate students following the earthquake, telling parents via message they were waiting further instruction from authorities.

It was a similar scenario for St James Primary School, where power had been lost.

  • Bricks scattered across footpath after quake

It's clear Muswellbrook has been worst impacted, where bricks fell onto a footpath below, as seen in this photo.

Muswellbrook resident Beryl Hartin described a loud bang when the quake struck.

"There was this boom and the whole house and the front fell off the air conditioner," she told the ABC.

  • Aldi ceiling falls down during earthquake

We have another picture of some earthquake damage here with local Dean Reid posting a photo of Aldi Muswellbrook's ceiling partially caved in.

  • Nearby resident says earthquake was 'massive'

While we're getting lots of reports of shaking from Sydney, it seems those living much closer to the quake site were impacted far more.

A woman in Muswellbrook, about 20 minutes' drive from Denman, said there were multiple shocks from around midday.

"There were two (and it was) not just a tremor, it was a massive earthquake," she told Sydney radio 2GB.

"The whole house rattled, and then about half a minute later, it rattled again."

  • NSW Police issue update on earthquake

While we gather more information about today's earthquake that's been felt across Sydney, here's NSW Police's statement on the quake.

Emergency services have received multiple reports of an earthquake in the Hunter Valley Region today.

The earthquake recorded a magnitude of 5.0 at 12:01pm in Denman, NSW.

NSW Police have been advised that NSW SES crews are responding to reports of minor infrastructure damage.

There have been no reports of major damage to infrastructure or buildings, and no reports of injury.

Dam owners in the region are urged to ensure that dam integrity has not been affected.

Any reports of damage or injury should be made to local relevant authorities.

  • Mitre 10 store near quake site endured 'epic' tremor

"Well that was epic wasn't it?!"

They are the words of the local Mitre 10 near the site where NSW's 5.0 magnitude quake hit shortly after midday.

They've shared photos of aisles with items strewn across the floor following the quake near Denman, northwest of Newcastle.

Muswellbrook Shire Council says some homes have no power and some have been left without water. They have reported minor damage to some buildings and we'll bring you further details when we have them.

  • Kamala Harris promises to be president for all Americans

Presidential nominee Kamala Harris has wrapped up her speech on the final night of the Democratic National Convention where she promised to be "a President for all Americans".

"With this election, our nation has a precious, fleeting opportunity to move past the bitterness, cynicism, and divisive battles of the past," Harris said. "A chance to chart a new way forward, not as members of any one party or faction, but as Americans.

"You can always trust me to put country above party and self, to hold sacred America's fundamental principles, from the rule of law to free and fair elections."

Donald Trump was clearly watching on, posting dozens of times on his social media platform during her speech.

Some of them seem out of place, like when he asked "WHERE'S HUNTER?" despite none of the Bidens being at the convention tonight.

"IS SHE TALKING ABOUT ME?" he asked in another post.

  • $100m Powerball winner comes forward

The Queensland winner of the $100 million Powerball jackpot last night has come forward and admitted she nearly misplaced the ticket.

The Brisbane resident revealed she had a feeling earlier this year a big win was coming.

“I haven’t been playing Powerball, so I thought, ‘Well, how am I going to win if I don’t buy a ticket?'" she told lottery officials.

“I was shopping the other day, and it’s coming up to my birthday, so I thought ‘Why not?’ and purchased a Powerball ticket.

“The funny thing is too, I almost lost it! I had to pull over on the way home from the shops because I thought I had left it there.

"After that, I put it in my glovebox, and I completely forgot about it until this morning."

Her prize is the biggest won by one player in Queensland history, while third biggest in Australia.

  • Police rubbish roundabout 'myth'

NSW Police are looking to debunk a series of myths as part of Road Rules Awareness week 2024 and today are focusing on roundabouts and giving way.

"The rules are clear, when entering a roundabout Drivers must slow or stop to give way to any vehicle already in the roundabout," Traffic and Highway Patrol Command said.

"The myth that drivers need only give way to vehicles on their right has long persisted and is completely wrong. Believing this can lead to collisions, insurance claims and action from Police."

    So there you have it.
