Hospital admissions jump during 'difficult' winter

Hospital admissions have reached record levels in Australia's largest health system, but further highs are expected following a "very difficult" winter.

More than 515,000 patients were admitted to NSW hospitals in the three months to June, the state's health statistics agency said on Wednesday.

Health Minister Ryan Park expects further records to be set once figures taking in the rest of the cold and flu season are released.

"I am literally monitoring this by the day, and in some hospitals it feels like I'm monitoring it by the hour," he told reporters.

"We've had a very, very difficult last winter period.

"Vaccinations have been down ... respiratory cases have been up ... presentations have been very high."

Fears of tuberculosis outbreak at childcare centre

More than 100 children are being screened for tuberculosis after a childcare centre in Sydney’s east was unknowingly exposed to the infectious disease.

NSW Health staff have set up a temporary testing clinic at Little Feet Early Learning and Childcare in Waverley, where 104 children and 34 staff are undergoing checks.

Parents were informed via email on Friday that their children may have been exposed after someone who later tested positive for tuberculosis spent three days a week at the centre over six months, Nine News reported.

A statement from the childcare centre confirmed the individual was present between February and August.

On Tuesday night, NSW Health hosted a webinar for families to provide reassurance, though many parents reportedly said the centre did not clarify whether the infectious person was a child or educator or which exact days they attended.

Images show moments before alleged Dezi Freeman shooting

Still images have been published by the Daily Mail showing the moments before Dezi Freeman allegedly shot two police officers dead and injured another.

Officers can be seen standing in the makeshift kitchen next to Freeman's bus where he lived with his family in Porepunkah.

The still images are taken from a video filmed in the build-up to the shooting, in which the Daily Mail reports Freeman pleaded with officers not to break in to his bus.

When he was told police had a warrant related to historic sexual abuse, he reportedly told them: "What bulls***".

After a lengthy back-and-forth between Freeman and the officers, the vision reportedly shows Detective leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson, seen wearing a red shirt, entering the bus via its roof moments before he was fatally shot.

Police are aware of the footage, and confirmed to The Age it is not police bodycam footage. Victoria Police said it would share more details later today.

Prime Madeleine McCann suspect to walk free

German investigators' prime suspect in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann is set to be released from prison in the coming days.

Christian Brueckner, 48, will walk free on Wednesday, September 17 at the latest, the lead prosecutor investigating Madeleine's disappearance has said, although it could be as early as this week.

Brueckner is currently serving a seven-year sentence in Sehnde prison, near Hanover, after being convicted in 2019 for the rape of a 72-year-old US woman in Portugal in 2005.

Defendant Christian B. (C) is brought to the courtroom for a session of his trial at court in Braunschweig, northern Germany, on September 25, 2024.

Last year, he was acquitted of three counts of rape and two counts of sexual abuse of children, alleged to have taken place in Portugal.

Brueckner was named by German prosecutors in 2020 as the prime suspect in Madeleine's disappearance but has not been charged in relation to the McCann case and denies any involvement.

In an interview in August with the BBC, Chief prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters said Brueckner "is not just our number one suspect, he's the only suspect".

He said they have evidence linking him to Madeleine's disappearance but that it is "not strong enough to make a guilty verdict likely".

      Aussie 'almost threw out' $250k

Well this could have been disastrous.

An Adelaide man has revealed he nearly binned a $10 scratch card that won him $250,000.

"It actually took me ages to work out because if I buy one, I usually get a different sort, but this one’s instructions were a little different. I kept reading it and reading it, and I almost threw it out," he told lottery officials.

Lottery officials say there are 15 major prizes around Australia yet to be claimed, including the mystery $100m Powerball win.

One theory, as this Adelaide winner considered, is that the ticket has been thrown out.

Now that would be a costly mistake.

NAB joins ANZ in jobs bloodbath

NAB will cut 410 jobs in its technology and enterprise division just one day after ANZ announced it was cutting 3500 full-time workers.

The big four bank announced the major restructure would impact 728 workers, including 410 permanent cuts to Australian jobs.

NAB intends to move some of these roles offshore, with 127 new positions in India and Vietnam.

Financial Sector Union national president Wendy Streets said the decision betrayed 728 Australian families.

“It is a betrayal of 728 workers and their families. Profits in their billions, jobs in the bin, banks are showing open contempt for their own people,” she said.

“Cuts this deep don’t just hurt staff, they hollow out services for customers and communities who rely on NAB.”

Australia says Israel has violated Qatar's sovereignty

Israel striking Hamas representatives in the Qatari capital Doha was the “wrong thing to do”, Australia’s top diplomat says.

The Israeli military confirmed overnight it carried out a “precise strike” targeting members of Hamas in Qatar.

At least five Hamas members were killed, according to the Islamist group.

Authorities in Qatar also said a Qatari security official was killed.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong said on Wednesday the strike “violates Qatar’s sovereignty”.

“It undermines or potentially damages the possibility of ceasefire and the release of hostages, and obviously it risks escalation,” Senator Wong told Seven’s Sunrise.

“Qatar has been working with the United States to try and deliver a ceasefire and the return of hostages.

“They’ve been tireless in those negotiations – that’s the context in which this strike has occurred.”

Qatar, which hosts the largest US base in the Middle East, is a key mediator in the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

Supermarket boss threatens to shut stores

One of the nation's largest retailers is weighing store closures and relocations amid an unprecedented crime spike in one Australian state.

Victoria is facing a pronounced surge in crime in 2025, particularly violent offences, knife-related incidents, and retail theft. The issue has prompted Ritchies IGA CEO Fred Harrison to even consider shutting up shop in several suburbs in the state, amid what he says are daily aggressive incidents.

It comes as both Woolworths and Bunnings reveal their staff are also facing regular abuse, often from individuals armed with weapons, including knives. Harrison said the situation has now reached "crisis point", where he is seriously contemplating whether "we want to remain" in certain areas.

"Is it all round more profitable, safer if we just close and walk away?" he wondered in an interview with the ABC's 7.30 program which aired overnight. In Australia, there are some 85 Ritchies IGA stores, and 52 of those are in Victoria.

Harrison believes it's the epicentre of the problem.

"I'd say 95 per cent of the issues that we are having today as a business are all in Victoria," he said. "It's getting to a point now where, at a number of our stores, you've got to question when leases come up."
