Penny Wong 'confident' Australia ready for Trump presidency

Foreign Minister Penny Wong appeared optimistic on Monday when discussing Australia's future with Donald Trump as US president.

Trump triggered a trade war with Canada and Mexico after he imposed sweeping tariffs on the US's immediate neighbours, with fears Australia could be next.

Wong suggested such a move was not a surprise and Trump is "doing what he said he would do".

While avoiding questions whether Australia will move to stand with Canada, Wong told ABC News Breakfast the Labor government "has confidence in our ability to navigate this" and stressed the current Free Trade Agreement for the US and Australia was beneficial to both.

"I made it clear where Australia sits," she said of her recent trip to the US.

  • Sam Murphy's mum reveals devastating wish

The mother of Samantha Murphy has issued a heartbreaking message ahead of the one-year anniversary of her daughter’s disappearance.

Tuesday will mark a year to the day since Ms Murphy went running in the forests near her home in Ballarat and disappeared, sparking mass volunteer search operations and an extensive police investigation.

Patrick Orren Stephenson, 23, has been charged with her murder, but he has pleaded not guilty to the alleged killing.

Despite extensive and repeated targeted searches across multiple bushland areas, her body has not been found.

Ms Murphy’s mother, Pam Robson, told the Herald Sun she missed her daughter “more than anything” and that she still had hope she would be found.

“(We) are hoping one day that they find her — she’s got to be out there somewhere,” Ms Robson said.

  • Coles making big change to aisles

Coles is slashing the number of products on its shelves by at least 10 per cent, following in the footsteps of discount supermarket chain Aldi. While the move could lead to higher profits for the country’s second-biggest supermarket, there are fears it could hamper competition for Aussie consumers.

The supermarket’s move to reduce the number of products on offer was flagged to investors in November. Coles chief commercial officer Anna Croft said the supermarket would be “simplifying overall”.

While Coles has not specified exactly which products it would cut, Croft reportedly noted the supermarket currently offered 13 basic table salts. She said this could be cut to five, with three different types of salt added to give customers more choices.

She also pointed out the supermarket sold haircare brands in six different sizes, which was creating “huge complexity” and noted this number could be halved.

“Even if I went hard year after year for two years on the trot and did double-digit rationalisation, I would still have more range than I had in 2019,” Croft said at the time.

“But we’re reinvesting in the categories in the space that makes the most amount of difference to customers.”

There are fears repairs to that stretch and over sections could take at least a week, Blenners Transport boss Les Blennerhassett told the Cairns Post, meaning a supply of goods to northern communities could be badly impacted.
