  • 'Everyone makes slip ups,' Albanese says after Biden blunder

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has responded to Joe Biden's mistake when he called Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelenskiy "President Putin".

Biden made the slip while introducing the Ukrainian president at the NATO summit in Washington, as he comes under increasing pressure to step down from the upcoming presidential election due to mental fitness concerns.

The mix-up happened just before Biden was set to give a press conference.

Albanese steered clear on whether the US president should step aside from the race but sympathised with Biden, saying it happens.

"Everyone from time to time, I think, has made a slip - it clearly was on his mind who President Zelenskiy is fighting," the prime minister told Brisbane radio station 4BC on Friday.

    "But it certainly is unfortunate."

  • Joe Biden refers to Trump as vice president

Well this is not ideal for Joe Biden. He has now referred to Vice President Kamala Harris as Vice President Trump, an error that came after he referred to Volodymyr Zelensky as Vladimir Putin.

Biden faced questioning over that first slip up and the mounting pressure he is facing from within his own party to step aside. However he once again brushed off questions about his ability to run for a second term.

"Look, guys, the idea anybody suggests that we haven't had an incredibly successful conference… how many times did you hear in that conference, I know it sounds self-serving, but other leaders, heads of state have thanked me saying, 'The reason we're together is because of Biden, because Biden did the following," he told the press conference.

  • Pressure mounts after Joe Biden's 'biggest' Putin mistake

Well this certainly will increase the mounting pressure on US President Joe Biden to call it a day in the upcoming election.

In an unfortunate – and for many consequential - mistake, Biden, 81, has introduced Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as Vladimir Putin during a speech about the US supporting Ukraine.

"And now I want to hand it over to the president of Ukraine, who has as much courage as he has determination, ladies and gentlemen, President Putin," Biden said, referring to Zelensky, before correcting himself.

"Going to beat President Putin, President Zelensky. I am so focused on beating Putin," Biden said while correcting himself.

The mistake led to gasps from the audience and unsurprisingly the clip has rapidly spread online.

Journalist Jack Parrock called it the "biggest gaff you can make in international diplomacy right now".

Biden's ability to take on a second term has been the biggest talking point in the US since his disastrous presidential debate with Donald Trump. A handful of Democrats have said its time someone else led the party, as have several key supporters of the party.
