  • Soccer great brings fans to tears with goodbye message

Sven-Goran Eriksson, the hugely successful soccer coach who took charge of the England national team for five years, died on Monday at the age of 76 following a battle with terminal pancreatic cancer.

His death came just days after a documentary about his life was released on Prime Video and features a goodbye message at the end that has touched the hearts of fans.

"I had a good life. I think we are all scared of the day when we die, but life is about death as well. You have to learn to accept it for what it is. Hopefully at the end people will say, yeah, he was a good man, but everyone will not say that," the Swede said.

"I hope you will remember me as a positive guy trying to do everything he could do.

"Don't be sorry, smile. Thank you for everything, coaches, players, the crowds, it's been fantastic. Take care of yourself and take care of your life. And live it. Bye."

Viewers say the final scene brought them to tears and many hailed Eriksson for his stoic response to his diagnosis.

  • Melbourne recovers after four-year lull

Melbourne has entered positive net migration for the first time in four years, online removalist platform Muval claims its data shows.

That basically means more people are moving to the city than leaving it. A negative net migration could have been behind property prices stalling in Melbourne as the average property price in other state capitals continued to grow earlier this year.

Melbourne suffered badly in terms of resident numbers during the pandemic, particularly during a draconian and lengthy lockdown as the state battled to eradicate the Covid-19 virus.

As the cost-of-living crisis continues to punish Australians, Sydney, the country's most expensive city, continues to see the most people moving away.

“Our water supply is not endless. Our climate and city are changing, and the population continues to grow,” water conservation programs manager Suhanti Thirunavukarasu said.

“So we need to start thinking differently about how we can safeguard our water supply for our children and the generations to come."

  • Australia puts cap on international students

The number of international students coming into Australia will be capped at 270,000 in 2025, bringing the influx back to pre-pandemic levels in a move to combat those financially exploiting the industry.

This will allow for 145,000 enrolments at public universities, 95,000 foreign student commencements in the vocational education and training (VET) sector, and 30,000 places at other universities and providers.

This will only come into force if the federal government can pass legislation on the cap.

Education Minister Jason Clare says there are roughly 10 per cent more international students in universities than before the COVID-19 pandemic and 50 per cent more in private VET providers.

  • Kamala Harris asks for big change to 'deal with Trump's lies'

Kamala Harris has riled Donald Trump after her team requested the microphones during their upcoming presidential debate should not be muted at any point.

Trump's team however are adamant the rules should stay the same.

“Enough with the games. We accepted the ABC debate under the exact same terms as the CNN debate," senior Trump adviser Jason Miller told Politico. "The Harris camp, after having already agreed to the CNN rules, asked for a seated debate, with notes, and opening statements. We said no changes to the agreed upon rules.”

  • Treasurer says Peter Dutton is a 'dangerous' party leader

Treasurer Jim Chalmers has stood by his comments labelling Peter Dutton the "most divisive" party leader in Australia's history.

Chalmers said during a speech on Monday that while Australian politics is relatively free of political violence, this can't be taken for granted and relies on leadership that avoids the politics of division.

"Leadership which is destructive, and divisive, is not really leadership at all and that's what we are seeing from Peter Dutton," Chalmers said as he delivered the 2024 Curtin Oration in Melbourne, as a federal election looms.

"He is the most divisive leader of a major political party in Australia's modern history - and not by accident, by choice.

"He divides deliberately, almost pathologically. This is worse than disappointing, it is dangerous."
