  • Queensland cracks down on 'reckless' crocodile acts

Queensland has introduced two new offences in a bid to crack down on reckless behaviour when it comes to crocodiles.

It is now an offence to purposely remain close to a crocodile as well as discarding food scraps in areas that may attract crocodiles. The two offences can trigger on-the-spot fines of $806 and $483 respectively.

The crackdown comes after a spate of close encounters, like the one reported by Yahoo below, as well as several deaths. A host of existing fines related to crocodiles have also increased.

"People may think feeding crocs or interacting with them is fun or harmless, but experience shows that doing so increases the risk to public safety," Environment Minister Leanne Linard said in a statement on Tuesday.

Crocodile conservationist Bob Irwin welcomed the news, saying there were finally laws for protecting crocodiles from "reckless behaviour".

  • New Zealand triples its tourist tax

New Zealand is tripling its tourist tax, and will slug visitors a NZ$100 levy from October 1.

Don't worry though, it doesn't apply to Australians or most Pacific Island nationals.

The tourism industry is worried the move will deter visitors and instead preferred a smaller increase to the charge which is currently NZ$35.

The tax is used to fund infrastructure and conservation projects.

Ms Higgins' lawyer told a Perth court the senator communicated with Mr Lehrmann's defence Steve Whybrow before and during his aborted criminal trial.

"What those 21 messages show is the senator's partisan attitude in favour of the accused," she told the Western Australian Supreme Court on Monday during her closing submissions.

Ms Young said Senator Reynolds gave Mr Whybrow suggestions for potential witnesses and phone numbers to contact them.
