Live updates: Johnson nominated for Speaker, Thune elected Senate GOP leader

Republicans in the House and Senate elected their leaders Wednesday after securing a trifecta — winning the House, Senate and White House — in last week’s election.

In the Senate, Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.) was elected Republican leader, beating out Sens. John Cornyn (R-Texas) and Rick Scott (R-Fla.) to replace outgoing Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) after a record-long tenure.

In the House, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) was nominated to retain the gavel despite initial protests from hard-line conservatives in the House Freedom Caucus.

He received a boost Wednesday morning, with President-elect Trump backing him for the job during a House GOP conference meeting.
