The little-known guarantee on Woolworths reusable bags

While the initial outrage over Coles and Woolworths’ plastic bag bans may have died down a little, shoppers are still looking for a way to get a bang for their buck if they forget to bring their own reusable bags to the supermarket.

Aiming to please the eco-friendly shopper, Woolworths has implemented a policy that means you’ll only ever have to buy its 99c green recyclable ‘Bag for Good’ once.

A picture of one of the bags was recently posted to the Markdown Addicts Australia Facebook page, noting that Woolworths’ policy is to replace the bags for free if they get damaged.

The policy is stated clearly on the outside of the bag, but many consumers might not even have noticed.

“Use this bag again and again. If it gets damaged, we’ll replace it for free,” the note on the bag reads.

Both Coles and Woolworths came under consumer fire when they announced they would be phasing out single-use plastic bags and replacing them with thicker reusable bags, costing 15c each.

Apart from the Bag for Good replacement policy, online shoppers at Woolworths who request their goods be packed into reusable plastic bags can return their unwanted bags to the store and gain a refund, an option not currently offered by Coles.

“When it’s time for your online reusable bags to be recycled, simply hand them back to us for recycling with REDcycle while receiving a new online order and we’ll refund $1 against your latest order,” Woolworths advises on its website.

The Bag for Good buy-once-only policy appears to have been a hit with social media users on the Markdown Addicts Australia page.

“Thanks for posting,” one person wrote.

“I didn’t realise. I get a msg [message] from Woolies reminding me to take bags when I go to the shopping centre.”
