Lionel Messi was a notable absentee from Barcelona's training session on Wednesday.

The Argentine attacker did not take to the field with the rest of his team-mates at the club's Sant Joan Despi base, causing speculation that he may have a slight injury problem.

However, sources at Barca say the 32-year-old was working alone in the gym as part of his specially tailored fitness programme ahead of LaLiga's return on June 11.

Barca's first game will be away to Mallorca on June 13, followed by a home clash against Leganes three days later at Camp Nou.

No fans will be allowed inside the stadiums as the health authorities take strict precautions following the lengthy break due to coronavirus.

Messi has admitted that playing without the presence of fans could have an adverse affect on player performance, but Barca have a two-point advantage over rivals Real Madrid with 11 rounds of the competition remaining and will be favourites to win the title once again.
