A lido in Kent has closed "unexpectedly" because of a "significant" water leak.

Medway Council said the water levels had been affected at The Strand lido pool in Gillingham on Thursday.

It said visitors with a session booked would get a refund and it was "working hard" to fix the problem.

A council spokesperson said: "We are very sorry for the inconvenience."

The Strand Lido opened on Saturday for the bank holiday weekend and school half term.

After half term it was due to be open every weekend until the summer holidays, when it will reopen daily until the last session on 1 September.

The Gillingham lido is 128 years old and is the only remaining riverside tidal saltwater pool in England, according to operator Medway Council.

Situated on the edge of the River Medway, the lido uses saltwater which is pumped from the river, filtered and chlorinated.
