Lidia Thorpe’s claim of terrifying attack
Senator Lidia Thorpe says she was “set upon with a weapon” in a Brisbane street over the weekend.
The former Greens Senator revealed the alleged attack on social media on Wednesday, saying she was ambushed at the same time the Labor Party’s national conference was under way in the Queensland capital.
“So, due to the Labor Love In last weekend. My security was compromised and as a result I was set upon with a weapon in the streets of Brisbane,” she wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“Says it all right!”
She provided no further details, and NCA NewsWire has contacted Senator Thorpe’s office for comment.
Labor held its three-day national conference in the Queensland capital from August 17-20, with the party’s most prominent members gathering to cement its policy platform.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese kicked off the major event with a standing ovation from thousands of Labor faithful, calling for support for the Voice to parliament referendum.
The centre of numerous political controversies, Senator Thorpe was told by the Australian Federal Police in April that she was the potential target of abuse.
“I have been advised a number of times by the Australian Federal Police that I need to watch where I go, that I’m potentially a target,” she said at the time.
Senator Thorpe has had past encounters with unhappy members of the public, with video of her hurling abuse at a group of men outside a strip club going viral in April.
The Victorian politician is heard in the video telling one of the men he had a “small penis”.
She claims that she did not start the exchange but was responding to harassment from the group.
“All I want to say to the black brothers there and anyone that we’re fighting,’’ she said during the incident.
“Any black man that stands with the f***ing white little c*** like that – youse can all get f***ed too.”
The senator was also tackled by an Australian Federal Police officer in March after trying to confront and anti-trans rally outside Parliament House.
Video of the incident caught Senator Thorpe approaching controversial anti-trans campaigner Kellie-Jay Keen-Minshull while chanting “you are not welcome here” before she was taken to the ground.
