Leicester City invokes the Undertaker in announcing latest signing

Cengiz Ünder is a Leicester City player. And the club may have gained a few new fans from the WWE universe in the process.

Leicester announced Ünder’s signing on Sunday with a striking, simple image on Twitter:

That’s the Undertaker’s iconic hat and jacket, lying in the middle of an otherwise empty pitch at the King Power Stadium.

The play on Ünder’s name was laid bare in Leicester’s welcome video posted a short time later. The Undertaker, real name Mark Calaway, is one of the most popular professional wrestlers in history, with a slam-dunk persona, signature moves and catchphrases and a 21-match win streak at WrestleMania.

Ünder joins Leicester on a season-long loan from Roma. The 23-year-old winger is perhaps better known for outwardly supporting Turkish offensives in Syria on social media than he is for his play, but his directness and ability to play on either wing should suit Leicester, which finished fifth in the Premier League last season and is bidding to return to the Champions League for the first time since 2016-17.

The sports world is no stranger to co-opting the Undertaker’s popularity. For instance, Angels reliever Hansel Robles has entered games from the bullpen to the Undertaker’s theme music, with an attention-grabbing video to boot.

If in the years to come Ünder gains the level of support among Leicester fans that the Undertaker has gained among WWE fans, something will have gone drastically right.
