Legislative Council applications window closes

The window for applications to be submitted to serve as a member of the upper branch of the Isle of Man's parliament has closed.

Elected by members of the House of Keys, the Legislative Council acts primarily as a revising chamber for proposed new laws.

Four seats are available as the current term of office comes to an end for Peter Greenhill, Bill Henderson, Rob Mercer and Kerry Sharpe on 28 February.

Potential candidates had until midday to submit a formal application confirming they wish to take on the five-year term ahead of the election at 10:00 GMT on 4 March.

The application process is part of a raft of changes to the process of electing MLCs approved by Tynwald last year.

Hustings

Prospective candidates will then meet with MHKs at an applicants' conference in a bid to secure the support of at least four MHKs before 13 February, with the names of those who successfully do that published at that point.

In order to stand in the election, those who apply would need a proposer, seconder and at least two other supporters from the House of Keys.

There will then be a hustings for the confirmed candidates on 24 February, before the vote takes place the following week.

The election is due to take place at 10:00 GMT on 4 March, and successful candidates would serve until February 2030.

Successful candidates will earn a basic annual salary of £71,659.

The council, which provides scrutiny of new laws, consists of 11 members, none of whom are publicly elected.

While eight MLCs are chosen by members of the House of Keys, the President of Tynwald is elected by both branches of the parliament in a combined vote, and the Bishop of Sodor and Man and the Attorney General are automatically given seats.

Elections to the upper chamber take place in tranches of four seats every two years, with those elected serving a four-year term.
