A mother has made an emotional appeal after her handbag containing a lock of hair belonging to her little girl who died six years ago was stolen.

Kirsty Baldwin, 35, stopped at a service station in Greater Manchester in the UK on Wednesday about 10.30pm (local time), leaving her handbag on the passenger seat of her car.

Before she was able to lock her doors or drive away, a man opened the passenger door and snatched the woman’s handbag, Greater Manchester Police said.

The designer bag contained an iPad, a large amount of cash, and a purse containing a lock of blonde hair that belonged to the woman’s two-year-old daughter Ellie Louise Baldwin, who died six years ago.

The thief was last seen getting into a car driven by a woman, before the pair sped off.

The distraught mother is appealing for the priceless memento of her little girl to be returned.

“Our daughter died unexpectedly of bronchial pneumonia and the lock of hair is all we had left of her apart from the clothes she had the night she died,” Ms Baldwin said in a Facebook post shared by police.

She pleaded for anyone who finds the lock of hair to hand it in to police.

“Robbery in any circumstance is particularly distressing but Kirsty and her family have been left devastated,” Constable Cherie Castle said.

“The hair is such a precious item that cannot ever be replaced and she’s desperate it’s returned to her.

“We’re hoping the offenders or whoever has any information about this robbery hear this story and return the hair as soon as possible,” she said.
