Sydney plumber's discovery leads to $44 million police bust

Plumbers working on a leaking toilet pipe in a Sydney unit block made a discovery that led to police seizing $44 million worth of crystal meth, and more than $1 million in cash from the property.

The workers were performing the routine job when they stumbled across bags of cash and a crystal substance in an open cupboard, NSW Police said on Wednesday after releasing pictures of the drug bust.

During a police search of the Canterbury unit and a locked garage, officers found almost 220 kilograms of crystal meth, known as ice, in 15 cardboard boxes, which has a street value of $44 million.

Just over $1.1 million in cash was also discovered, with a portion hidden inside a grocery bag.

NSW Police say they also seized chemicals used to make GBH and ice, and small amounts of MDMA and cocaine.

Detectives are now appealing for help and have released CCTV footage of a man they believe can assist with their investigation.

They say the man was filmed walking down Minter Street — where the unit is located — at 8.10pm on the same day police searched the home.

He is described as being of Asian appearance, about 170cm tall and aged between 25 and 30 with short, black hair.

Anyone who recognises the man. or has information about the drug bust, is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
