League fans to decide on Smith statue

Cameron Smith could become the next Queensland rugby league great to be immortalised with a bronze statue at Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium.

Smith, who retired from representative football, would be among the leading contenders after the state's premier called for league fans to nominate the next player to be immortalised like Wally Lewis, Arthur Beetson and Darren Lockyer.

Annastacia Palaszczuk paid tribute to the long-time Queensland skipper and suggested he, like Johnathan Thurston and Allan Langer, would deserve to join the "hall of fame" outside the Maroons' spiritual home.
