Lead detected in Geelong water fountains

Lead has been detected in Geelong drinking fountains, but authorities assure the city's water supply is safe.

The council's public water fountains were turned off on Wednesday as authorities work to determine the cause of the contamination, but provider Barwon Water says the problem does not affect the wider water supply.

"Drinking water supplied through our reticulation network is unquestionably safe to drink and meets all health and safety guidelines," it said in a statement.
