LeBron James jokes about 'thorough' review to land on 'Washington Football Team'

LeBron James awoke from his pre-game nap to a huge development in the NFL world.

The football team in Washington is officially now the ... Washington Football Team. The name is temporary for the 2020 season while the franchise works on a legitimate one to replace its old name. And the Los Angeles Lakers superstar couldn’t help but joke about it.

James wrote:

“Just waking back up from my pregame nap to see about The Washington Football team??? Is that real?? No way! Oh man they had a thorough intense long board meeting about that one huh.”

Washington owner Dan Snyder first announced in early July, after financial pressure from sponsors and partners, that the team would undergo a “thorough review” of its name. The announcement to ditch it came early last week.

In Snyder’s defense of the temporary name, it’s a long process to rebrand a professional sports team. And the NFL season, if it starts on time during the COVID-19 pandemic, is seven weeks away.

Count Kevin Durant as a fan

Brooklyn Nets star Kevin Durant got in on the conversation and gave James a disapproving look about the joke.

Durant is an avid fan of the Washington football team and gave the fire emojis to a post recommending the name change to “Washington Red Wolves.” He was presented a game ball by Snyder in 2014 and has been seen at games over the years.

Sports world reacts to ‘Washington Football Team’

But the decision to name a football team “football team” is still unreal and Twitter had fun with it.

Dez Bryant, who is still a free agent, isn’t a fan of the name and even went so far as to say he’s now worried a football season isn’t to be this year.
