Lawyers in Qld court for 'hiding cash'

Two lawyers have faced a Brisbane court over allegations they helped clients hide money from the federal government's special financial intelligence unit.

Jason Murakami, 45, and Ron Behlau, 34, appeared in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday on charges of attempting to pervert the course of justice and conducting transactions to avoid reporting requirements.

It's alleged the former Nyst Lawyers employees engaged in structuring, which involves banking cash sums of $10,000 or more in smaller amounts to avoid the transaction being reported to the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC).

The Crime and Corruption Commission alleges they did so to obstruct criminal confiscation proceedings.
