How Lawyer X will give evidence

Caroline Schelle

* Former barrister Nicola Gobbo - also known as "Lawyer X" - has been issued with a notice to give evidence at a royal commission in police user of informers

* Commissioner Margaret McMurdo ordered Ms Gobbo to give evidence on January 29, 2020

* Ms Gobbo will give evidence via telephone over short periods, with cross-examination potentially limited

* This will be to accommodate her health issues and safety concerns

* Lawyers argued Ms Gobbo was too sick to give evidence because of ongoing physical and mental health issues

* Ms Gobbo will not have to attend the royal commission's Melbourne hearings in person

* If she does not make herself available, the commission can ask for her to be charged with failing to comply with the order.
