Family's grief over junkie's sentence after crash that killed boy

A driver high on ice who crashed her boyfriend’s car, killing his 11-year-old son, is in prison after being sentenced to two years.

Logan Woodyatt’s mother wept in court on Thursday as the woman who killed her little boy was locked up.

Mother-of-three Michelle Currey, 46, is a self-confessed junkie who was high on a deadly combination of methamphetamine and marijuana on the night she crashed her boyfriend’s car into a tree at Bilpin in November 2016.

In the back seat was her partner’s son, Logan, who suffered a list of catastrophic injuries.

Two days after the accident, Logan’s mother had to make the harrowing decision to switch off his life support at Westmead Children’s Hospital.

Speaking outside court, Logan’s family lashed out at the legal system, saying there was no justice for their little boy.

“Logan lit up the world, he could turn anyone’s day into the best day ever just by smiling,” Logan’s aunt Mel Girling said.

She said the two-year-sentence meant that “laws are not for the innocent, they are for the drug users”.

“He would have been 14 by the time she gets out, she has experienced everything, she gets to breathe and do normal things.”

The judge was restricted from handing down a longer sentence because of the nature of the charges laid, which relate to drug and driving offences.

At one point the judge even asked: “What would the defence have been to manslaughter?”

Adding to the family’s grief, the roadside memorial set up outside a flower stall was recently stolen and the family are appealing for its return.
