The premier’s New Unity party and the Union of Greens and Farmers rescinded their nominations and said the alliance would try to agree on a joint candidate in January.

The coalition had split their support ahead of the vote, with two of the three parties backing incumbent Martins Kazaks for another term and a third group supporting Reinis Berzins, chief executive officer of state-owned development institution Altum. Kazaks’s term of office expires on Dec. 21. Kazaks had previously said that one of his deputies would run the bank if a governor was not immediately appointed.
