Sky Ferreira topless shot 'not a big deal'

Sky Ferreira received a lot of attention when she appeared topless on her debut studio album, Night Time, My Time, but she didn't expect it to be such a big deal.

"It was just a picture to me. I didn't really think it was going to be that big of a deal. I didn't think it would offend that many people," Ferreira told AAP.

In the shot, the 22-year-old appears topless in a shower looking straight into the camera.

"There are way bigger issues than my body or whoever's body it's just weird... it's like people have a problem with sexuality unless they get to use it and enjoy it for themselves," she said.

"I don't think those photos were necessarily sexy and if I was trying to sell my body ... I could have made it look way nicer," she said.

The young star has been making waves in the music scene for her unusual synth-pop/rock sound, but she's also received attention for happenings in her private life.

Last year, the singer was charged alongside her boyfriend, Zachary Cole Smith, a musician in indie band DIIV, for possession of ecstasy and resisting arrest after their car was pulled over for vehicle and traffic violations.

However, the young singer says she's just living her life and is trying to be honest in her music.

"People want to make me a certain way because I didn't pretend, it's easy to say that I'm like troubled or crazy or something like that when really I'm just, like, being a person," she said.

"I mean I literally just turned 22 two days ago and it's just crazy I don't feel 22, that's for sure. Sometimes I feel older, and then I don't feel like any age really."

Ferreira has many creative roles, and while she admits she's focusing on her music and acting (she recently had a part in indie film The Green Inferno) she's also modelled in the past for Calvin Klein and Marc Jacobs.

"Modelling really helped out and was a big part, is a big part of my life. It really helped support my music and I really appreciate fashion and stuff," she says.

But with her focus on music, she likes to maintain a sense of reality, and admits to feeling frustrated when she sees artists "pretending to be something they're not".

Ferreira says, as a sensitive person, there's a vulnerability to her music which she says is true to who she is.

"I feel like the artists I relate to are kind of similar in that sense in their music or really just sort of honest to what they are," she said.

The singer will be in Australia next week for the popular Byron Bay music festival Splendour in the Grass and sideshows in Melbourne and Sydney.

"I've been (to Australia) before but I didn't get to see much of it, I only got to see Sydney at the time.

"This time I'm going to Melbourne, I know that, so that will be exciting and I'm playing Splendour in the Grass and another show in Sydney," she said.

"Hopefully I'll have time to see stuff."
