LATEST COVID-19 DEVELOPMENTS:

* Australia has broken its own record for new coronavirus infections, as the death toll exceeded 1000 and the disease claimed its first Indigenous victim.

* There were 1375 new local cases across the nation on Monday with 1290 detected in NSW, where there were also four deaths.

* An unvaccinated man in his 50s who died at Dubbo hospital was Australia's first Indigenous coronavirus death.

* NSW Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant said the state will likely keep periodically inoculating its residents against COVID-19 for years to come.

* Victoria's exit from lockdown will depend on reaching high vaccination levels, but allocations of Pfizer first doses at state-run hubs have already been exhausted.

* The state recorded 73 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, with 52 linked to known outbreaks.

* One day after Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews confirmed lockdown will not end on September 2, Health Minister Foley said it was hoped the coronavirus outbreak in the state had "plateaued".

* ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr said a push to start reopening the country before 80 per cent of over-16s are vaccinated is unsafe.

* Canberra recorded 12 new COVID-19 cases as the territory government weighs up whether to extend its lockdown, which is due to end on Thursday.

* Queensland will mandate vaccination for workers at the state's five COVID-19 hospitals, after it was recommended by a report into a breach which led to a lockdown.

* Western Australia's capacity to handle a COVID-19 outbreak is being questioned, as the state again postpones hundreds of elective surgeries.

* Virgin Australia wants all frontline workers to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by mid-November, joining Qantas in a push for mandatory inoculation.

* International students will be temporarily allowed to work longer hours in aged care because of the coronavirus pandemic.

AUSTRALIAN VACCINATION NUMBERS:

* There have been 19,085,741 doses administered in the national COVID-19 vaccination rollout up to Sunday, including 158,428 in the previous 24 hours.

* Of the total, 11,085,589 have been administered by the Commonwealth (an increase of 43,203 in the previous 24 hours).

* 8,000,152 have been administered by the states and territories, including 115,225 in the previous 24 hours.

* Nationwide, 58 per cent of people aged over 16 have received one vaccine dose while 34.4 per cent are fully vaccinated.

AUSTRALIAN CORONAVIRUS NUMBERS:

* Australia reported 1375 local cases on Monday: 1290 in NSW, 73 in Victoria, and 12 in the ACT.

* There were also six overseas-acquired cases reported: three in NSW, two in Queensland, and one in the NT.

* The national death toll is 1003: Victoria 820, NSW 149, Tasmania 13, WA 9, Queensland 7, SA 4, ACT 3. (Two Queensland residents who died in NSW have been included in the official tolls of both states).

GLOBAL CORONAVIRUS NUMBERS:

* Cases: at least 216,417,000.

* Deaths: at least 4,501,000.

* Vaccine doses administered: at least 5,204,456,000.
